Scholarship Winner Doreen Dunican's Journey to the GBTA Convention

My journey to the GBTA Convention started long before I got on the plane. In looking at the convention schedule, there were so many continuing education sessions to choose from and I had to decide on how to make the most of my time. I started by attending the first-timer’s lunch on Sunday. I was fascinated listening to our keynote speaker, Anthony Zuiker, creator of CSI. Although I had never seen the television show, his story was universal and inspiring and a great way to kick off my first GBTA convention experience.
Interviews with the CEOs of United, Delta and American provided a snapshot of the current state of the travel industry from their perspective and also gave us a glimpse into the future. The “Hotel Contracts Boot Camp” session was very informative, providing detailed information that I have already begun to implement. I also found the “Leading with Emotional Intelligence” session to be very interesting.
The convention also gave me an opportunity to see and hear one of my most favorite actors, Kevin Spacey. Kevin highlighted the need for us to take risks and to appreciate those that mentor us in life and in our careers. He was funny, entertaining and a bit irreverent.
The convention is the place to network with peers, vendors and GBTA leaders. Face-to-face conversations at the convention led to a new account rep for my TMC and several corporate airline programs that I might otherwise not have had.
I would like to thank BABTA for the scholarship and the opportunity to attend the GBTA convention this year. The convention provided practical education, an opportunity to learn more about the industry as a whole, the ability to network with my peers and vendors and share insight with each other. Overall, it was a great experience and I look forward to next year’s convention.
